Where to now? The ULYSS Origin Story
13. Feb, 2017

How did ULYSS come to be? Why design a travel app? Where did it all start?

Founder Markos Aristides Kern is the man to ask.

The entrepreneur himself is a seasoned globetrotter and spends just as much time in the air as he does on the ground. Kern is an entrepreneur who has a deep passion for travel. His work has brought him into the depths of the Sahara, the Antarctic abyss, and more recently, to mysterious North Korea where he founded the country's first surf school.

Australia aside (don't worry, it's on his must-see list), Kern has been to every continent on Earth and travels tens of thousands of kilometers every year. Spending so much time in transit, Kern has developed an acute sense of where to go, what to do, and how to make the most of your experience when traveling. This love of travel and the desire to help connect others with places across the globe was the driving force behind Kern's motivation for creating ULYSS, the A.I. Travel Decision-Maker app.

Different people have different tastes. Someone in their late 20's with no children might be looking for a hidden gem of a location off the beaten-path, whereas a family of four may prefer some relaxing time under the heat of the sun with close-by attractions such as waterparks or museums. “People are very specific in what they are looking for, the perfect destinations are as individual as special. To capture this in a cunning algorithm so as to give the user the best possible suggestions, well it simply doesn’t exist - so we've made it easy.” says Kern.

The whole point of ULYSS is to connect people with places, even if it's just for curiosity's sake. Kern emphasizes that, "The app is meant to be fun. I want people to get excited about making travel plans but I also want people to just have fun and play around, even if they aren't planning on going on vacation anytime soon."

Your otherwise standard morning commute can thus become a quick journey around the world. The beauty is that you are fully in control of what you're looking for, how far and how long you're willing to travel, and how much you're willing to spend. If you're not satisfied with your suggestions, you can also modify your answers to get a new set of personalized destinations.

From kitchen table idea to smartphone app, ULYSS has come a long way. A new version of the app has just been created and is ready for you to explore.
